This Privacy Policy explains what information ClearSplit ("we", "us", or "our") collects, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. ClearSplit is built for private expense tracking — we collect only the information needed to provide shared ledgers, account access, AI-assisted features, support, and transactional notifications. We do not sell your personal data.
We use your information to operate your account, create and sync shared ledgers across your devices, provide AI-assisted features you request, send transactional notifications, respond to support requests, and keep the service secure. We do not use your data for advertising, marketing profiling, or sale to third parties.
Some features send your content to third-party AI providers (currently OpenAI) for processing:
Data sent for AI processing is subject to that provider's data handling policies. We do not sell this data, and we use it only to deliver the requested feature. By using these features, you consent to this processing.
On Android, ClearSplit can optionally read SMS messages to detect payment transactions and auto-create expenses. This permission is optional and can be revoked at any time in your device settings. We read only messages that match payment or banking patterns — personal messages are never read, stored, or transmitted. SMS we send (where applicable) is transactional only, such as verification, account security, and important service notices; STOP requests are honored for non-essential messages.
If you connect your Gmail account to ClearSplit, the app uses read-only access (gmail.readonly) to find and parse transactional receipt emails (e.g. Swiggy and Zomato order confirmations) to automatically import and split shared bills. We read only these transactional emails — we do not read, store, or share personal emails.
ClearSplit's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not use Google user data for advertising, marketing, or profiling, and we do not sell or transfer it to third parties.
Paid plans are processed by Google Play. ClearSplit does not hold user funds, process payments directly, or store your payment card details. UPI settlements happen directly between users in third-party payment apps (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, etc.); we are not a party to those transactions.
We share data only with providers that help us operate the service, under their respective data policies:

We do not sell personal data to anyone.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account in the app, or via our account deletion page. Deleted account data is removed from our systems within 30 days. Some records may be retained in anonymized or aggregated form, or where required for legal and accounting purposes. Note that expense data shared within a group may remain visible to other group members as historical transaction records.
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including secure transport and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
ClearSplit is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
You can access, correct, or delete your data, revoke SMS or Gmail permissions at any time in your device or Google account settings, and opt out of non-essential messages. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected].
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the Effective Date above and, for material changes, notify you via the app or by email.
